Not to get too off-topic... But I just searched around online for directions.

Basically you cut rectangles of cloth and layer them onto each-other while coating them with resin or epoxy.

I got cheap ($15) fiberglass resin for my first attempts. Epoxy is a bit too expensive for me to experiment with, but I hear you get better results (harder) with it.

Site News / Forum theme on large displays.
« on: February 16, 2017, 11:16:26 am »
I will be doing some work on the theme soon. I have noticed a few circumstances where various elements don't display correctly on larger monitors.

If you have any input on how the site looks, please share here. I know it's a little bland-and-tan :) But it reflects my favorite scale color.

I think I will have to get one of those IZULAs. I've been making some home-grown 'micarta' with denim that would be fun to attach to it.

The cheapest will always be what you have! I have seen knives made from those $4 machetes  you get at Harbor Freight (You can get two knives out of one easily.) I have some cheap, flat pry-bars that are earmarked for knife making.

If you are just starting out I would go with what you can find cheap that looks like it will work. After some practice you will have some knives on your belt and some experience under it :) Then get some O2 tool steel or some AUS 8A.

Bladforums has some decent threads about knife making with nothing but hand tools. There are some videos on youtube showing start-to-finish with just hand tools.

Let us know what you make!

Sharpening and Care / Re: Sharper on one side
« on: February 16, 2017, 10:59:42 am »
Do you mean one side has a steeper bevel to it? I would just try to keep them even. And if it cuts the way you need, leave it alone until it needs sharpened again. Otherwise you might remove too much metal too soon. But I am no expert.

Nice! What did you have to do to convert it?

Any treatment to the walnut? I'm digging the color.

From what I have seen people make, friction folders seem to be the most practical to put together. A very classic style.

Welcome, edap617! You might want to take the email address part of your handle off. That's just asking for spammers to find it.

Wow, that is a nice looking machine. I had never heard of it before.

It might be worth it for accurate and easy convex grinds. I have done some by hand but I have trouble getting them accurate. I need to show my knives more regular use so I can practice sharpening more often  :)
